Moving to Japan #1: Updating Vehicle Registration

Hey, everyone!

Bhaiya here. I’ll be moving to Japan shortly, and will be writing some articles on what the process to move was like. The first article in the series will be about what it was like to update my vehicle registration. I’ll be writing more articles shortly, so stay tuned!

The Process

Since I will be leaving my car behind in North Carolina when I move to Japan, I will be adding my father to the vehicle registration so he can drive it while i’m gone. Different states have different rules, but in my case I had to bring the following documents to the DMV:

  • Both our driver’s licenses
  • Address proof
  • Vehicle title
  • Current vehicle registration document
  • Current insurance documents

After submitting all of the documents, there was a fee of around $900 to update the registration. It’s really expensive, so make sure to have some money saved up before going to the DMV. The DMV also asked if I wanted a custom license plate number, and I agreed to having one made. It’s not necessary, but it’s nice to have something that you can choose.
